A few things we’re big fans of…
Litters ‘n’ Critters Rescue Society
LNC is the rescue I volunteer with as Foster Coordinator. A not for profit, all-breed, dog-specific rescue located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we find new “forever homes” for dogs that find themselves in need. We operate on the foster home system, so all our dogs are kept in family homes until it’s time for adoption (and as such we do not have a shelter location). Learn more on facebook.
Jennifer Sinclair – Master Groomer
Good groomers are hard to find. Great groomers are almost impossible! After a year of bad grooms at a national retailer and a super stressed-out Kaylee, we found Jenn. She’s amazing! A certified Master Groomer through the Canadian Professional Pet Stylists (one of only two in Nova Scotia), Jenn is the best – and Kaylee loves her! Check her out on Facebook!
Basinview Animal Hospital
Basinview has been our vet since Kaylee came to us, and they’ve always taken terrific care of the pooches. We’ve had plenty of annual checkups, a few “urgent” trips and two surgeries there, and Dr. Yvonne and Dr. Adrienne have been very good to our pups. Guinness is no longer ‘surly’ when he heads to the vet (which was not the case at our previous vet), which goes to show what a good vet clinic can do. They also support rescue! You’ll find Basinview on facebook or at their website.
4 Paws Veterinary Hospital and House Calls
Our “emergency” vet! 4 Paws took great care of Guinness after a late night run-in with a porcupine (and subsequent follow-up appearance of more quills a week later), and without the 2 am “up-charge” you might see elsewhere. They also offer regular vet service throughout the day. We wouldn’t hesitate to use them for a house call, either. We’re impressed! You can find them on facebook or their website.
Pet Valu Clayton Park
This Pet Valu location is run by Ally Smith, a great friend to Litters ‘n’ Critters and other rescue organizations in Nova Scotia. In addition to being a kick-ass pet store that carries some hard-to-find products, they also adopt out kittens for Pick Of the Litter Society and hos fundraiser events for LNC. Check them out!
Rodney Habib and his crack team have made Planet Paws the go-to resource for all things nutrition-related for your dogs. Rodney has been a supporter of rescue since the beginning and is now known worldwide for his dedication to canine nutritional education. You can check Planet Paws out on facebook, or listen to Rodney’s most recent TedxTalk here.
Happy Hounds Daycare
Guinness and Kaylee love Happy Hounds! A really good daycare can be hard to find, but we’ve had nothing but great experiences with Jane and her team. The pups come home exhausted but happy – what more can you ask for? You can find them on facebook, or at their new space on Lady Hammond Road (evaluations are required so be sure to call ahead to make arrangements!)
Mango Dogs Training
Back before we had Kaylee, we wanted to take our training with Guinness up a couple of notches. Enter Ted Efthymiadis, one of the best trainers in Canada. Ted is the reason my dogs enjoy the off-leash freedom do explore, run, swim, and really be dogs – he’s a great guy, and a great trainer, and Guinness loves him! Even today – years after our training – he never hesitates to answer questions, or help out if we need him. Litters ‘n Critters also owes Ted a huge thank you for helping us rehabilitate a number of dogs who would never have had a chance without his help. You can learn more about Ted and Mango Dogs on their website, facebook, or check out MangoDogsMedia for his online training tools. He isn’t kidding when he says “Great with Dogs, Even Better with People”!
